Tokenised Fund Platform Due Diligence for Invesco

Context

Invesco, the global asset manager, sought to become the investment manager for Superstate’s tokenised U.S. Treasury fund, USTB. However, before proceeding, Invesco wanted to ensure that Superstate met institutional standards for technical architecture, operational controls, counterparty risk, and implementation.

Appold was therefore engaged by Invesco to conduct technical due diligence and provide independent strategic and advisory support. Working alongside internal stakeholders, Appold delivered structured analysis and operational guidance designed to support Invesco’s decision-making and implementation planning.

Appold’s mandate focused on evaluating the platform’s technical efficacy and operational robustness across multiple workstreams. This included:

  • Conducting technical due diligence on the platform’s on-chain infrastructure.

  • Assessing custody architecture, transaction workflows, settlement models, and blockchain interoperability considerations.

  • Reviewing governance frameworks, security controls, and operational resilience measures.

  • Supporting the evaluation of tokenised treasury fund mechanics and associated operational dependencies.

  • Advising on implementation, institutional risk considerations, and infrastructure maturity.

  • Facilitating coordination between technical, operational, and strategic stakeholders across the initiative.

A central challenge for institutional tokenisation initiatives is distinguishing technical capability from operational readiness. Appold’s structured analysis sought to overcome this by understanding and identifying the underlying technical and operational realities, thereby enhancing visibility into where the infrastructure aligned with institutional operational standards and where further maturity or controls were needed.

Appold’s technical and strategic support contributed to a broader assessment that ultimately informed Invesco's decision to manage the Superstate Short Duration US Government Securities Fund and become the first asset manager to utilise Superstate's digital transfer agent infrastructure.

Technical Due Diligence

For any institution looking to integrate with tokenisation technology providers, the technical competence of the target platform or infrastructure is only one of many attributes a platform must be able to evidence.

Indeed, a demonstrably mature and robust operational governance environment is just as critical for adoption to materialise.

As a company, we have seen time and time again how institutional deployment requires clearly defined control environments and operational models that integrate with existing financial processes and regulatory expectations. Appold remains engaged in supporting financial institutions, asset managers, and infrastructure providers as they navigate the operational and strategic complexities of integrating tokenised assets.
